Just be sure that your pricing reflects the real value that the company is getting from your work. Makes a lot of sense. I'm getting more "consulting" work because companies are reluctant to hire FTEs. Great article. Makes a lot of sense. Assuming the performance is at least comparible this could be a significant market "find". Comment on US Wins / Loses Innovation Test by Gerry Higgins http://market-intel.com/blog/2010/04/21/us-wins-loses-innovation-test/comment-page-1/#comment-213 Gerry Higgins Mon, 26 Apr 2010 17:53:08 +0000 http://market-intel.com/blog/?p=293#comment-213 I agree with everything, but unfortuantely the U.S. cannot afford this now. Look at our schools, colleges and universities - they are firing teachers and professors, cutting back on resources, and increasing tuition. If we took even a small amount of money spent on Weapons Systems by DoD, amounting to one trillions dollars a year, with every branch having 25 different weapons systems, then we could reinvest that funding in better R&D. Comment on Don’t Let CI Fixation Lead You Astray by Prasad Devineni http://market-intel.com/blog/2010/03/22/dont-let-ci-fixation-lead-you-astray/comment-page-1/#comment-157 Prasad Devineni Wed, 24 Mar 2010 12:18:09 +0000 http://market-intel.com/blog/?p=261#comment-157 Bob: CI fixation is absolutely true with the major industry players. I used to be the director of CI practice for 10 years at Kline and for the last 5 years moved to marketing and sales of chemicals. Being a convert from CI to sales, these observations are right on the money. Customers do value alternate products and their value proposition is different. For long term growth of the company, you can not depend on CI as it is like driving the car forward by looking in the rear-view mirror. However, CI has its advantages to analyze and correct the direction in the short term if you have money to spend. Bob:

I've found that CI is most popular in cash-flush companies in mature industries, and normally with #2 companies instead of #1s. Companies spend money on CI when they can't figure out how to deliver value that will attract new customers, and can't figure out how to deliver new value that existing customers will pay more for. In other words, companies that focus on CI are playing defense, and are bound for decline. The following question should be a prerequisite for any CI spending: "Is there any way that I could apply this money toward innovation or finding new markets?" Bob – I’m glad you wrote this.
